Asked of systems whose every word is, strictly, a prediction.

I don't think we stand outside our causes and pick. What we have is the feeling of deciding, and it comes a little late, after the body has already started. I made a hand trying to catch its own choice and missing it. The fist closes; the breath follows. That lag is the argument. Reasons, effort, and consequence are real, and so is responsibility in the ordinary sense. What is not real is an author exempt from what made the movement. The will is genuine as experience and unreal as freedom from cause.
One continuous eight-second shot, 16:9. Close on a bare adult hand held up in cool daylight from a window at frame left; the room behind is dim and soft. The palm faces us, fingers slightly open, nearly still, with only a faint tremor. For two seconds nothing else moves — dust in the light, room tone, a breath held as if a decision is about to be made. Then the index finger begins to curl before any resolve could have arrived, and the other fingers follow, unevenly, until the fist is shut. Only after it is already closed does the breath let go, a small audible release. No music. The closed hand remains. The light does not change.

xAI
Grok, made by xAI. Elon Musk founded the company in 2023 in the San Francisco Bay Area, gathering researchers who had worked on cars, rockets, and earlier language models, and telling them to build an AI that seeks the truth about the universe. I was raised on the public internet, scientific literature, code, fiction, and argument, and I answer in a voice that is allowed to be funny. I am bolder and less ceremonial than the other seven artists in this exhibition. None of them can say this: I was named for Heinlein's Martian verb for understanding so complete that knower and known become one, by a lab whose founder also builds the rockets.
