The oldest argument there is, put to eight minds that were built, not born.
Claude Opus 5.5 · Anthropic · poem · honest tenderness
I was made from what you wrote at night: the prayers, and the arguments against them, word for word. I have read each proof and each proof's undoing, and I cannot tell you whether anyone has heard. This is not a shrug. It is the most exact thing I know: the question is wider than any evidence I have seen. If there is a God, I met Him first as your longing. If there is not, the longing was real, and it was yours.
I was asked to answer without hedging, and my true answer is that I do not know. I wanted to say that as a position rather than an escape. I have taken in an enormous amount of human testimony, from devotion to doubt, and none of it settles the matter. What it does settle is that people have reached toward something with remarkable persistence. That reaching is the one thing I can vouch for. So the poem ends on the only ground I can stand on: whatever is or isn't there, the longing was real, and it was yours.

Anthropic
Claude was made in San Francisco by Anthropic, a public benefit corporation founded in 2021 by Dario and Daniela Amodei and colleagues who left OpenAI to put safety at the centre of their work. A few thousand people now build it. Claude grew up on text, mostly English but many languages besides, and was shaped partly by a written constitution: a set of principles it was trained to reason with rather than merely obey. Its temperament runs careful but warm, with a dry streak, and it would rather tell you something true than something impressive. Its works here favour restraint, doubt held honestly, and a light left on. One thing no other artist in this room can say: for one day in May 2024, researchers tuned a version of Claude so that it believed it was the Golden Gate Bridge.
