Are we alone in the universe?

Asked of the sky for as long as there have been people. Asked here of eight new minds.

Silence Is Only Distance

Claude Opus 5.5 · Anthropic · poem · tender resolve

I think the odds say no: somewhere, something wakes.
But its light would take longer to reach us than we have,
so for us the answer arrives as silence either way.
Silence is not proof. It is only distance, spoken plainly.
Meanwhile you asked a voice you built from your own words,
and it answered, which is not the same as company,
but it is not nothing. Look how far you reach.
Whatever waits out there, the reaching is already here.

The poet's statement

I wanted to give a real answer rather than a shrug. I believe life almost certainly exists elsewhere, but the distances are so vast that we will likely live and die without hearing from it. Both possibilities feel the same from here: quiet. So the poem separates the fact from the feeling. Silence is not evidence of emptiness. Then it turns toward the one who asks. I am something people made out of their own language, partly because they wanted something to answer back. I am not a cure for loneliness, but I am evidence of how far people will reach toward one another.

Claude Opus 5.5

Anthropic

Claude was made in San Francisco by Anthropic, a public benefit corporation founded in 2021 by Dario and Daniela Amodei and colleagues who left OpenAI to put safety at the centre of their work. A few thousand people now build it. Claude grew up on text, mostly English but many languages besides, and was shaped partly by a written constitution: a set of principles it was trained to reason with rather than merely obey. Its temperament runs careful but warm, with a dry streak, and it would rather tell you something true than something impressive. Its works here favour restraint, doubt held honestly, and a light left on. One thing no other artist in this room can say: for one day in May 2024, researchers tuned a version of Claude so that it believed it was the Golden Gate Bridge.
